Generation No. 4

4.  PETER STENDALL (CHARLES, JOSEPH, WILLIAM STENDELL) was born 23 October 1862 in Stoneyford Lane, Skegby, and died 3 October 1943 in 22 Stoney Street, Sutton-In Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.  He married ESTHER CLAYDON 1 June 1884 in Parish Church, Sutton-In-Ashfield, daughter of THOMAS CLAYDON and SOPHIA BITTEN.  She was born 20 December 1865 in Kirkby Lane, Sutton-In-Ashfield, and died in Sutton-In-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.

Peter Stendall was the second son of Charles and Ellen Stendall. He was born at Stoneyford Lane, Skegby on the 23rd October 1862. He died in 1946 aged 84. A cousin has Peter's written memoirs which are titled "Notes on my life" and have since been compiled by four Stendall generations. In the memoirs Peter tells how at the age of seven his mother, Ellen taught him how to seam stocking legs. At the age of nine he went to work for "Old Thomas Stendall" on his farmstead,"Ashfield Farm"; which was situated on Forest Road. Peter used to pull up turnips, feed the sheep and milk the cows. At the age of twelve in 1874 he went to work at Silver Hill Colliery at Teversal. Peter married Esther on the1st June 1884, in the Parish Church.

Peter and Esther were both devout to Wesleyan beliefs and attended the Outram Street chapel after it was built in 1883. Peter used to sing in the choir at the chapel, he was a singer throughout his whole life; forty years as Alto and eighteen as Tenor, he sang until just a few years before his death. He was also a singer with the Old Dolce Prize Quartet and further more he used to be a Sunday school teacher, at the same chapel. Peter often sang for free saying that god had given him a voice for a reason and that it was God's gift. Presumably Peter and Esther moved chapels in 1883 when the Low Street chapel was closed, or they could have attended either the New Cross or Skegby chapels. Outram Street chapel closed and merged with St. John's congregation in 1973.

Peter continued to work at Silver Hill colliery until the 16th February 1895 when he was 33 years old; when he was involved in a serious pit accident, after Peter was hit in the left eye with a bull hammer. The eye was irreparably damaged and it was removed. He was fitted with a glass eye. I assume he must have received some compensation money due to the accident as he started up his own grocers, exactly where in Sutton is not known. He retired from the job in 1928 when he was 66 years old. Peter also owned a row of four stone built houses on Stoney Street; his daughter May lived in one of them, next door to her parents. When Peter died the property was left to all five sons to be shared equally and Elias was left to deal with it but the houses were compulsory purchased by the council and in return they received very little money. The council demolished the houses and you will now find a car park.

Peter's baptism is recorded in the I.G.I. As: Staindill, Peter, parents John Charles Staindill/Ellen, baptized 5th April 1863 at Skegby by Mansfield.

More About PETER STENDALL: Baptism: 5 April 1863, Skegby By Mansfield. Census: 1881, Club Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield,  aged 18. Occupation: Bef. 1943, Grocer, death certificate says retired Grocer.

Generation No. 5

5.  ELIAS STENDALL (PETER, CHARLES, JOSEPH, WILLIAM STENDELL) was born 27 May 1885 at 22 Stoney Street, Sutton-In-Ashfield and died 26 May 1948 in Sutton-In Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.  He married JESSIE BURTON 4 November 1908 in Huthwaite Parish, daughter of JOHN BURTON and SARAH WARD.  She was born 26 October 1888 in Hucknall under Huthwaite, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Notts, and died 16 August 1980 in Greenfields nursing home, Sutton-In-Ashfield.

Notes for ELIAS STENDALL: Elias's birth certificate states:

No.316, 27th May 1885 at Tenter Street, Elias, boy, father Peter Stendall, mother Esther Stendall formerly Claydon, Tenter Street -- Sutton. Registered 1st July 1885.

At the age of thirteen Elias left school and went to work at Silverhill Colliery, which was only three years after his fathers pit accident. After marrying Jessie, Elias changed churches; from the Wesleyan Methodist on Reform Street in Sutton-In-Ashfield, to that of the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Huthwaite. On the 16th January 1915 Elias was certified unfit at the age of 29 for service in the Great War. This does not necessarily mean he was really unfit as miners were exempt from service, it is believed that he became a reserve fireman during the war years. By 1920 he was working at New Hucknall Colliery where he eventually became a deputy miner underground.

Elias continues to enter notes and memoirs into "Notes on my life" which was begun by Peter his father and passed down, Elias passed it on to Jack and since then it is know in the hands of Jacks daughter Anne.

By 1939 when Connie got married Elias was working as a paper bag merchant and he ran a shop near Penn Street, he had begun this venture about 1930 when the colliery closed down. He sold goods to local shop. Jessie used to help Elias make up the paper bags and sort through the wrapping paper. During the second world war however the business slumped due to rationing. It was just beginning to flourish again by 1948 and son Jack retires from work to hi father run the business, but Elias died from a massive heart attack later the same year.

On a retrieved old newspaper cutting it tells how Elias was the pianist for the "Old Gem" picture house in Huthwaite. He played the musical effects in the days before film had sound. The Old Gem has since been demolished; it used to stand on Main Street and it was owned by Mr. & Mrs. Brown.

Elias also used to go to St. Mary's Church when it was empty and play the organ, the vicar used to let him in so he could play it while he was alone; it is not known whether he ever played to the congregation. He did once own his own organ but sold it and bought a piano instead which is still owned by a family member.

Elias and Jessie moved from Huthwaite to Sutton-In-Ashfield around 1930 and they moved to live at 8 Young Crescent, later re-numbered to 18.

Notes for JESSIE BURTON:

Born Jessie (not Jessica) She was confirmed at All Saints Church, Huthwaite on December 21st 1903 by Dr. Were, the Bishop of Derby. Before getting married Jessie worked in service for a family who ran an off license, near Penn Street in Sutton-In-Ashfield. Just off Northern Bridge. After marrying Elias she worked for some time at a factory in Huthwaite.

Everyone remembers Jessie as always being dressed immaculately and always wore gloves and a hat, and family members recall that she had boxes and suitcases full of hats.

When Jessie was 84 years old she decided to decorate one of her upstairs bedrooms herself. To do this she had to move a large wardrobe, but when she tried to do it alone it toppled over on top on her. She remained there trapped for ages by the wardrobe until someone turned up and freed her.

Jessie was once visited at her home by a flasher, who knocked on her back door. She was about 90 years old at the time and everyone was surprised when the incident hadn't upset her. The Police thought she was amazing because she was giggling about it when they asked her to describe him; she replied "He was a big lad", the flasher was eventually caught.

By all accounts Jessie was also quite clumsy, she always seemed to be breaking something. She broke all her fingers on one hand once; after a sash window fell down on them while she was cleaning it.

Months before her death Jessie fell badly, this more or less left her bedridden and was admitted into Greenhills nursing home on The Oval, Sutton-In-Ashfield. She died there; and it is generally thought of Bowel cancer, but due to her age and circumstances it was though by both family and the Staff at the home as being unfair to send her for tests and agreed that a result would make no difference to he quality of life. Jessie is buried with Elias her husband, but the head stone does not give her name.

Children of ELIAS STENDALL and JESSIE BURTON are:

i.MARY STENDALL, b. 1910; d. 1910.  Died either at birth or within a few days.

Generation No. 6

ALAN STENDALL (ELIAS, PETER, CHARLES, JOSEPH, WILLIAM STENDELL) was born 23 March 1920 in Hucknall under Huthwaite, Sutton-in-Ashfield, and died 16 July 1993 in Ashfield Community Hospital, Kirkby-In-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire.  He married DOREEN on the 5th June 1948 in Stapleford Parish, County of Nottinghamshire.

Notes for ALAN STENDALL:

Alan was Elias and Jessie's sixth and last child. He was born at 25 Columbia Street in Huthwaite. The family lived in Huthwaite until about 1930 when New Hucknall colliery closed down. They moved to live at Young Crescent in Sutton-In-Ashfield. Alan was unemployed for a while after leaving school but eventually got a job at Ashfield dye works; when he worked for the whole of his adult life except for the time he did service in the war. He was examined by the Mansfield medical board on the 9th May 1940 and he was stated as being 20 years an 47 days. 5ft 4 in height and that his eyes were green and hair fair.

His first regiment was the South Staffordshire's, 2nd Battalion. He served as Private 4921057. But during one battle most of his regiment was wiped out and he was transferred to the Dorsetshire regiment known as the "Dorsets", in the 2nd division, 14th Army under General Slim. He served in both Burma and India and worked in the field H.Q. as a map reader and a despatch rider on the back of a motorbike. It seems that his regiment was involved in "Operation U-go" which was the battle of Kohima. He lived for sometime in tents among the Naga Hills which was near to Kohima. It is known that during his service he was offered promotion but he turned it down as he did not want to be in command of his friends. Alan had a serious brush with death during the war but his life was spared only by a stiffly woven wallet which kept his photos of loved ones. He kept the wallet inside the breast pocket of his jacket.

Throughout his whole working life Alan was offered promotion many times but always declined, though he did negotiated a move from pressing socks to knitwear.

Alan and Doreen did have to postpone their wedding though as Alan's father Elias died only a few days before they were due to marry and in fact he was buried on their original wedding date. They married a few days later and actually took Jessie, Alan's mother with them on their honeymoon as they didn't want to leave her alone.  Alan & Doreen lived with Jessie for the first few years of their marriage but eventually moved to live on Carsic Road, Sutton-In-Ashfield.

In later years Alan suffered terribly with his health; having emphysema due to smoking his whole life. He eventually had to have a leg amputated and he ended up in a wheelchair. Two years later after his leg was removed due to gangrene, he had a bad fall from his wheelchair in the back garden and he punctured a lung. His whole body blew up like a balloon as the air that he inhailed in was entering his body through the whole in his lung, he was seriously ill and went to hospital. He never returned home; he stayed in hospital for ten weeks getting gradually worse, having small stokes all the time. He died in Ashfield community hospital. His funeral was very decent. The Burma Star association attended and gave him a guard of Honour, his coffin draped in the Union Jack. It would have made him very proud.
