  • Looking for relatives of Kate Florence Amy SHEPHERD & George James HUMM
  • Posted by Elizabeth Molineux Enquire for E-Mail address on the 28th July 2003
  • I'm looking for family of Kate Florence Amy SHEPHERD (1882-1967) who was married to George James HUMM in January 1904. They had one child, Doris HUMM (1906-1993) who I believe had no children, so there are no direct descendants. A member of the HUMM family has a collection of old portrait photographs of Kate Shepherd's family and would like them to go to an interested member of the SHEPHERD family. I'm not certain about the location but the family might have been based around Camberwell. Many thanks, Elizabeth

  • Looking for the ancestors of Henry Gabriel BROWN & his father Thomas Henry BROWN
  • Posted by Maggie Pearce on the 23rd July 2003
  • I'm searching for the ancestors of Henry Gabriel BROWN who was, according to the 1901 census, born in Jersey in the Channel Islands. Different reports give either 1864 or 1868 for his date of birth. His father was Thomas Henry BROWN. Henry BROWN worked on the docks at Birkenhead and was probably a stoker on the China Shipping Line. He married, in the 1890s, first Annie BEHER, second Zillah WITHINGTON, both in Birkenhead. I can find no reference to his birth in Jersey or to having been there in subsequent census returns. Any help would be much appreciated. Maggie Pearce.

  • Looking for information regarding the ROE family of Snelston
  • Posted by Marilyn Coetzee on the 29th June 2003
  • I am looking for information about the ROE family of the village of Snelston. My ancestor - William ROE, was christened in 1793 in St Peter's Church, Snelston. He was the son of John ROE & Mary. From my researches, it appears that William's mother may have been born Mary WRIGHT in Ashbourne. Family lore states that the ROE family originally came from Ashbourne, so this ties in. William emigrated to South Africa with the "1820 British Settlers". He named his farm, "Birchwood Park", after the estate in Snelston. He was an illiterate labourer, so might have worked on the estate. Please, does anyone have any further information about this family? A real stroke of luck would be the existence of a Family Bible! I look forward to receiving any information you may be able to offer... Thanks

  • Looking for Information Re: Family of John FISH & Margaret CHAILLE/CHALLEY/CHOLLEY
  • Posted by Pamela Jones on the 9th June 2003
  • I am trying to trace my family FISH.as follows:- John FISH, block printer of Mousley m. Margaret CHAILLE/CHALLEY/CHOLLEY not sure) we know he had = a daughter Elizabeth 1830 - William FISH born Mottram 1831 - John FISH 25.2.1833 Glossop - Mary FISH 1835 Stockport - (& my grandpa) Ralph FISH 1837, Stockport & Margaret FISH 1838, Stockport. He signed Williams marriage cert 1849 at Stand Parish Church, Whitefield. So we know he was in Glossop at least until 1833. We think he was born in or around 1810 & married on or about 1828.  === Also trying to trace Mrs. Margaret FISH b.1811 Sheffield, mother of another John FISH b.1833 Glossop. Daughter Mary FISH 1835 Stockport Cheshire - Ralph FISH 1837 Stockport Cheshire &  Margaret FISH 1839 Stockport Cheshire. Trying to trace who Margaret married & when if possible, only know surname FISH. We know Margaret FISH (who was born 1811 at Sheffield) got remarried, to Samuel WALSH born 1806, a Farnworth Coal Miner and in 1851 lived in Prestolee Road, Ringley Pilkington District. She had more Children named WALSH & as follows:- Dinah 1826 Kearsley - John WALSH 1826 Kearsley - daughter Martha (on 1851 census is 2 mths) born Outwood, Lancs. We were wondering if the two were the same family but William went to Australia in or around 1850's. Maybe John FISH (the block printer) died and she remarried WALSH .... but we cannot confirm it as yet. === Can anyone help? If Margaret CHAILLE/CHALLEY/CHOLLEY married John FISH Blockprinter and then married Samuel WALSH it would be confirmation for us ... So if someone can help us with dates for John FISH Blockprinter or Margaret CHAILLE/CHALLEY/CHOLLEY we would be very grateful. Thank you, Pamela Jones (Nee Fish)
  • Looking for Information regarding Thomas SELBY & Charlotte (formerly HULL)
  • Posted by Charlotte Selby on the 8th June 2003
  • I am looking for more information on my great great grandparents - Thomas SELBY and Charlotte SELBY (Maiden Name HULL). They had a son named John Benjamin SELBY who was my great grandfather born the 21st September 1884 in Nottingham. This is the only child I know of that they had, not sure if there are more. When he was about 15 yrs of age, he joined the Boer War 1899-1902 South African Campaign. Also I heard he was in the war in India with the Bengal Tigers. He later on married Lucy SELBY(Maiden Name DARBY) ... she had a brother, I heard he was called Cyril DARBY, but he was killed in a motorcycle accident. They had a son in England named John Cyril SELBY born the 29th June 1911 & they also had 2 other children in England Mabel SELBY AND Doris SELBY, but I heard that Mabel was not his daughter. LUCY was a Catholic woman and very short, she was about 4 foot 11 inches tall or shorter. John Benjamin SELBY came to Canada in 1911 to look for a job and the following year april 1912 they left from Southampton in England to go to Halifax. I do not know if they lived there or if they went somewhere else. If anyone may help me it would be a great blessing, it is very hard to search for our ancestors.Yours truly Charlotte Selby, from Canada.

  • Looking for descendants/Ancestors of William COCKAYNE & Emma HOWARTH?
  • Posted by Martyn Cockayne on May 31st 2003
  • I am looking for information on my Great Grandfather William COCKAYNE. Born 1867? died 1942 at Belper. Married Emma (nee HOWARTH?) also of Belper. Her parents retired to Blackpool. I would like to know where he was born, who his brothers and sisters where, who his parents where and as much about his ancestors as possible please. I know he was once a miner who took up the profession of a Cobbler after being buried for several days underground. He part owned a 'Futtral' at Heage, Derbyshire, near the spit/bog and wink mining area. He first set up at Heage as a Cobbler and had a 'Boxing' Club for boys at the back. He then moved to new premises in Belper at the corner of Swinney Lane. Locals who remember him recall that he always had a mouth full of 'tacks' and would always put one in a spinning top toy for the kids. They also recall he swallowed as many as he nailed in when in conversation! Two names of brothers suggested are Joseph and Samuel. Can anyone help please? Best wishes Martyn & Carol Taylor-Cockayne... www.jacksdale.org.uk
