The following names are recorded in the 1817 depositions regarding the Pentrich Revolution. The depositions (or sworn statements) list information given by witnesses or in some cases the accused themselves and tell how each man was involved. George BACON of Alfreton

Was at Edward Halls of Swanwick about half past 2 o�clock on Tuesday morning & said to John Hall (son of Edward) & his family �You see we come forwards as volunteers & you have been dragged out of bed, we have been up since 11 o�clock�. [John Hall]

At the first meeting at Suttons Asherfield Barn present at this meeting: A.Booth - a man from Leicester, Thomas Bacon, John Bacon, George Weightman, John Wyld, Joseph Weightman, James Barnes of Swanwick, Edward Haslam of same place & William Smith of Ripley. [A Booth]

Was at another meeting there 3 or 4 days or a week after when the same persons/ except Thomas Bacon & the Leicester man attended at this meeting they talked about making pikes procuring arms & gunpowder. [A Booth]

Was at the 5th Meeting at Asherfield Barn about the last day of May or the beginning of June this was a strong meeting, there were present Thomas Bacon (who had just returned from Nottingham) A.Booth, Michael Onion, John Onion, John Onion Jnr, John Cope, Edward Haslam, Laban Taylor, Joseph & George Weightman, John Wyld, Nathniel Walters, James Taylor, Isaac Ludlam, William Turner, Coupe, John Hill, William Smith, Burrows, Samuel Walters, John Rodgers & Tapleton alias Stapleton. Thomas Bacon opened the business of the meeting and stated plans of operations which were to commence on Monday night June 9th  Depots of arm & Ammunition were to be seized & barracks attacked. [A Booth]    

Was at the 6th meeting at Asherfield Barn on Thursday June 5th held at 10 o�clock at night which was not quite so numerously attended as the last but consisted of nearly the same persons as were present at the former meeting. A delegate from Leeds who had arrived at Pentrich addressed the meeting exhorting them to be steady, firm & unanimous and assured them that at Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester &c they were in great forwardness.  The Nottingham Man was introduced & explained the plan of operations and the time of rising was fixed. About 2 months since, he with one Herman Booth told J. Cope, T.Bacon his brother was gone to Nottingham to follow 5 London delegates to York. [J. Cope]    

He & George Weightman brought from old T.Bacon as they said and gave to J.Cope (who was going to Sheffield) the address of Smith the Landlord of the Blue Bell Sheffield. [J. Cope]    

James Hill & William Turner of South Wingfield met at his house on Monday June 9th & he told them there was a gentleman come from Nottingham and that they were to get together that night & go to Nottingham. [James Hill]    

Was with the mob before it quitted Pentrich. [W.Shipman]    

Sent for Thomas Stapleton (alias Tapleton), to Pentrich and told them there was two barrels of gunpowder at Mr. Harveys of Heage and he must bring them to Pentrich. [Stapleton]    

Was with the Nottingham Captain and his party at the sign of the Glass House in Codnor about 4 o�clock on Tuesday morning June 10th, where they ordered bread & cheese & ale and went away without paying for it. [Stapleton]

Miles BACON (son of John)

9th June - Fetched Joseph Wilkinson by force from his house at Wingfield Park on Monday night about half past 10 o�clock. [J. Wilkinson]   

Was with the party at Codnor & had a pike. [Charles Walters]

Thomas BACON of Pentrich; FWK

A person by the name of Burton came from Nottingham to his house, at Pentrich about the time or very soon after the meeting of delegates in London with petitions for parliamentary reform. [A Booth]  

Went with James Barnes to the Queens Head on Alfreton Common where they transacted business with Benbow. [A Booth]    

Called a meeting at the White Horse in Pentrich kept by Weightman, which he, Benbow & others attended. [A Booth]    

Appointed delegate for Pentrich. [A Booth]    

Money collected for defraying his expenses to London. About £5 was collected and given him accordingly. [A Booth]    

Went to London with petition and in a few days wrote down to Job Walters of Pentrich on the subject of the establishment of a Hampden club. A meeting called in consequence held at his house when his letter was produced & read to the meeting & it was agreed that a Hampden club should be established. [A Booth]    

A. Booth had heard him say before he set out for London that he would not give a pin for the petition unless something would come after it. [A Booth]    

About Lady Day 1817 he stated the number of men enrolled in various parts of the kingdom to overturn the Government were about 400,000. [James Booth]    

A month or 5 weeks before Whitsuntide received a letter from one Stevens of Nottingham supposed to be president of the committee of the Nottingham Hampden club. [A Booth]    

Meeting at Ilkeston proposed in consequence of the letter from Stevens. [A Booth]    

Met Stevens & Burton (both Nottingham men) 5 or 6 days after at Nottingham. [A Booth]    

On his return from Nottingham he set off immediately into Yorkshire or Lancashire for the purpose of forming a plan to overturn the Government and said that he had got some money from Nottinghamshire towards bearing his expenses  this was about the 27th April 1817. [A Booth]    

Went to Nottingham & other places & has kept going about the country ever since. [A Booth]    

Went to one Oliver of Bonsall. [A Booth]    

A. Booth heard him say that he was about to make a second journey into the north & should visit Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester & others in which places it was understood he was commissioned by the Nottingham Committee to visit. [A Booth]   

Told Booth & others on his return of his second journey, that it was a bad job that the business he been upon had been put off  and understood from him that some appointment had been made for a General Insurrection to take place on Whitsun Monday but that any such insurrection had been postponed. [A Booth]    

One John Holmes of Nottingham had also been with him to Sheffield. [A Booth]   

Went out again and visited Derby, Hinkley, Leicester & other places, & returned by Nottingham. [A Booth]    

Said great preparations were making all - over the Empire viz. at Birmingham, Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester, Leicester, Leeds, London & other places and was informed Scotland was going forward too and all things going on well. [A Booth]   

Held meetings again at Pentrich about a month or 5 weeks ago, money collected for Bacons use� [A Booth]    

Attended meetings at Asherfield Barn did not attend the second meeting. [A Booth]    

Opened the business  of the 5th meeting so having just returned from Nottingham. [A Booth]    

He stated that the country was to use & commence business at the same time, which would be on the Monday night following (9th June) the large towns would rise about midnight and seize all depots of arms & ammunition within their own towns & attack the barracks &c. [A Booth]    

Went to Nottingham on the day after the meeting to acquaint committee that they disapproved of the plan to proceeding to Nottingham immediately and that it would be more advisable to seize upon the Butterley Iron Works. [A Booth]    

Was not returned in time for the 6th meeting at Asherfield Barn on the 5th June at 10 o�clock pm but joined before it broke up & brought Jerry Brandreth with him who explained the plan of operations and proceedings. [A Booth]    

Was at the meeting at the White Horse in Pentrich on Sunday the 8th June. [A Booth]    

Sent Joseph Weightman to Nottingham the 8th June by appointment to know whether the plans still continued unaltered to prevent mistakes. [A Booth]    

A genteel person on horseback came to Pentrich on the 9th before Joseph Weightmans return & reported to the leading men at Pentrich that all things were going on well and that no alteration of plans had taken place. [A Booth]

About two months ago John Cope met him in Butterley when he said there were delegates going in all parts of the country & there would soon be a general insurrection. [J. Cope]    

A few days after this John Bacon told John Cope he was to go to Nottingham to follow six delegates to York. [J. Cope]    

About ten days after this John Cope met him at Suttons Barn on his return from York, Nottingham & others. Said there was fine work going on & he had to go into Yorkshire again to meet the same delegates and said he must make haste as he expected a general rising before he could get back.  A meeting at the barn of about 20 people it was 11 o�clock at night - Bacon made a speech and said he had been 30 years trying to bring about a revolution & should now succeed. Told John Cope to do what he could to bring the Butterley people forward who would be forced if they refused. [J. Cope]    

A day or two before last Whitsunday the Leeds delegate desired George Weightman would inform him that he should send him a letter from Nottingham to let him know how they were going on & whether he (Old Tommy Bacon) was to go to Westminster or not. [J. Cope]    

On John Copes return from Sheffield he was gone to Manchester. [J. Cope]    

Met the Leeds delegate, John Cope & George Weightman at the White Horse Pentrich on Friday morning June 6th. [J. Cope]    

He began to talk of a man of the name of Waine of Nottingham that was to have commanded the people in Derbyshire, but he was ill and the Nottingham man then present was set in his place  he and the Nottingham man talked about plans of convention. [J. Cope]    

Joseph BAILEY of Ripley

Marched on Tuesday morning June 10th with William Smith & others from Ripley for Langley Mill, on their route to Nottingham. [George Burrows]

William BARKER of Wingfield

He told Nathaniel Jennings on Monday night about 9 o�clock he must go to William Haltons barn in South Wingfield that night in bout half an hour & if he did not go they would blow his entrails out. [Jennings]    

Was at Hartshay about about 3 o�clock on Tuesday morning June 10th & had a long pike in his hand. [R.Wragg]    

June 9th - Was at Elijah Halls at South Wingfield Park on Monday night about 11 o�clock  Elijah Hall was compelled to get up & when he came down he found several persons in the house & among the rest he knew William Barker.  Was at the murder at Mr. Hepworths. James BARNES of Swanwick; FWK

Was with Benbow & Thomas Bacon at Peachs� �the Queens Head� on Alfreton common when delegates were recommended to be sent to London with petitions for parliamentary reform.  [A. Booth]    

Was at the first meeting at Suttons Asherfield Barn with Armon Booth a man from Leicester. Thomas Bacon, John Bacon, George Weightman, John Wild, Joseph Weightman, Edward Haslam of Swanwick & William Smith of Ripley, was at another meeting there about a week after with the same persons (except the Leicester man & Thomas Bacon) at this meeting they talked about making pikes & procuring the fire arm gunpowder. At the 2nd or 3rd meeting he was appointed secret committee man for Swanwick. [A. Booth]

Seconded motion for reports as to number of arms in the respective parishes & from whence ammunition might be taken. [A. Booth]

5th June - Was at the 6th meeting at Asherfield Barn field on Thursday (5th) about 10 o�clock at night which consisted of nearly the same persons as attended the former meetings  A delegate from Leeds, who had been at Birmingham attended this meeting which he addressed exhorting them to be firm, steady & unanimous assuring them -  that a Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester & other places they were in great forwardness. 10th June - About 2 or 3 o�clock on Tuesday morning he called George Elliott up who lives at Swanwick & threatened him  Elliott heard a great noise of men shouting & calling all people up & a number of men came to Elliotts Door & could distinguish Barnes�s voice amongst the rest.  [George Elliott]    

Was at Hannah Marriotts of Butterley Park about 4 o�clock on Tuesday morning armed with a gun & was very active on the march in breaking open houses & taking men & arms. [John Revill] [Thomas Jennings]    

Was in the rear with a gun and in the course of the march to Codnor he said �Come my lads, get forward we shall be too late�, & was driving a party before him with a gun. [William Peach] [John Peach] [William Radford]

Was armed with a pike and appeared very active in passing about in the mob and in fetching men out of their houses in the neighbourhood of Codnor & Langley Mill to join them. [Thomas Hardy] [Thomas Clarke]

William BENBOW of Manchester (Reformer)

Delegate from Manchester at  Pentridge, Alfreton & other places to urge them to send delegates to London with petitions from every town & village in that part of the County. [A. Booth] [William Young]    

At Peachs the Queens Head on Alfreton Common with Thomas Bacon & James Barnes transacting business on the above subject. [A.Booth]    

When at Pentrich he addressed a meeting of the inhabitants there assembled by the agency of Bacon at the White Horse, kept by Ann Weightman, exhorting them to send up a petition & with it a delegate also. [William Young]

Mr. Henry BESTWICK of South Wingfield Park; Farmer

Robert BESTWICK of Heanor

A leading man in the Heanor Hampden club - Chairman of it - Meeting first held at Thomas Allens ~ The Nags Head in Heanor.  Afterwards remarked to a large room used to be used as a Methodist meeting house, belonging to Samuel Weston of Tag Hill near Heanor. [J. Fletcher information]

Went with James Collier alias Vincent, to Nottingham on Monday morning June 9th to know if they were ready. [J. Fletcher information]

Samuel BESTWICK of Heanor

Went with John Fletcher to Lilleys of Codnor to desire him to have the Codnor men ready to join the Pentrich on the following morning as they passed through. [J. Fletcher]

Francis BETTISON of Swanwick

10th June - About 10 o�clock on Monday night was taken out of his house by Edward Haslam. [F.Bettison]

10th June - About half past 2 o�clock on Tuesday morning he came to William Peach�s with a pike in his hand very tight with two sharp hooks & ordered Peach & his son out saying if they did not go they would be shot. [William Peach] [John Peach] [William Radford]

Jesse BIRKAMSHAW of Ilkeston

Met by Jon Fletcher of Heanor on Monday morning about 9 o�clock entered into conversation on the subject of the intended march of the people from Pentrich & other places to Nottingham said he would go with them.  Produced a handful of bullets  said he had 500 more of them & that he had made them himself. Was seen with a great number of armed people at Langley mile and carried a gun. [John Fletcher information]

William BLOUNT of Greenwich Ripley; FWK

Was with the insurgents in their march towards Nottingham from Ripley. [Joseph Slack]    

Entered the house of Mr. John Stanley of the Parish of Pentridge Miller, & took down and carried away a gun. [Joseph Slack]

He and several others assembled in Ripley between 7 & 8 o�clock on Tuesday morning June 10th took two guns from Anthony Stanleys of the Parish of Pentrich & Marched off towards Nottingham. [Anthony Stanley]
