1817 Depositions - Regarding Pentrich Revolution

The following names are recorded in the 1817 depositions regarding the Pentrich Revolution. The depositions (or sworn statements) list information given by witnesses or in some cases the accused themselves and tell how each man was involved. George WEIGHTMAN of Pentrich: Sawyer

Collected money for sending Thomas Bacon as a delegate from Pentrich Hampden club with petition to London. [A. Booth]

Gave notice of the first meeting at Asherfield barn. [A. Booth]

Attended first meeting, when they talked about making pikes, procuring fire arms, gunpowder & others. [A. Booth]

Was at the meeting when the secret committee was appointed. [A. Booth]

On the Friday before last Whitsunday, J Cope met him and a delegate out of Yorkshire of the name of George Crabtree, who was a printer, the delegate said the rising which was to have taken place on Whitsunday was put off till the 4th of June. [J. Cope]

The Leeds delegate told him to inform Tommy Bacon that he should send him a letter from Nottingham to let him know how they were going on and whether Old Tommy Bacon was to go to Manchester or not. [J. Cope]

He & John Bacon brought from Old Tommy Bacon, to J. Cope who was going to Sheffield, the address of Smith the landlord of the Blue Bell, High Street, Sheffield and the names of two hundred persons whom he was to see  and to ask if the London delegate had been. [J. Cope]

J. Cope saw him on his return from Sheffield and told him all that he had heard. [J. Cope]

Was at the fifth meeting at Asherfield barn about the last day in May when Thomas Bacon addressed the meeting and stated time of rising & others. [J. Cope]

Was at the 6th meeting at Asherfield barn. When Thomas Bacon being absent, the beginning of the meeting not having returned from Nottingham a delegate from Leeds attended and addressed the meeting exhorting them to be steady firm and unanimous and assured them that at Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester and other places they were in great forwardness. Thomas Bacon arrives before the meeting broke up in company with the Nottingham Captain who also addressed the meeting and explained the plan of operations. [J. Cope]

Was with the Leeds delegate, Tommy Bacon and J. Cope at the White Horse, Pentrich on Friday morning June 6th previous to Crabtrees return home, who reports that things were going well in the South & tat they were to come from Birmingham and Wolverhampton to take Weedon Barracks in Northamptonshire & others. Was ay Henry Browns of Crich on Sunday the 8th June and asked him if he was ready. Saying they would be something amiss very soon. [Henry Brown]

Attended the meeting at the White Horse, Pentrich on Sunday June 8th  when the General conversation was on the subject of the intended insurrection & similar to what had before passed at the Asherfield barn meetings and the Nottingham Captain produced a map of England and George Weightman said the Wingfield & Pentrich people were not willing to come out till they had killed Colonel Halton. Told A. Booth he should go to Swanwick to tell them to get ready and muster their arms. [A. Booth]

Told James Hill and John Bacon that the insurgents were to get together on Monday night June the 10th at Wingfield and that the Pentrich people were to met Wingfield Park at 10 o�clock and take the guns from Elijah Halls, Isaac Walkers, Henry Bestwicks & Frances Hepworths. [James Hill]

Was with James Hill and William Turner at John Bacons in Pentridge on Monday afternoon June 10th and stated that a Gentleman had been over from Nottingham and was gone to Sutton-in-Ashfield. [James Hill]

Was at Wingfield on Monday night June 9th and at the barn in the park and had a gun which he was loading. [J. Turner] [W. Turner] [J. Turner]

Appeared with others to have the command of the party who assembled at the barn. [T. Turner]

Had a bag of bullets with him there and the Pentrich men not coming to the place of meeting he and some other person went to fetch them and did not go to take arms from the houses in the park. [Isaac Ludlam Jnr.] [T. Bettison]

He and the Pentridge party joined the party who have been at Mr. Hepworths, at Pentrich House End, where they appeared to be about 200 strong. [Isaac Ludlam Jnr.] [Wm Turner]

Forced Josiah Wilkinson to join the Wingfield party. [Wilkinson]

At Pentrich he joined the Nottingham Captains party who had been at Mr. Wheatcrofts of Buckland Hollow, near Heage and set off on horseback to go to Nottingham to see how they were going on there. [Samuel Levers] [Wm Wheatcroft] [G. Goodwin]

James WEIGHTMAN of Pentrich

Applied to A. Booth soon after the 5th meeting at Asherfield barn (about 31st May) to get him a pike head from Wm Turner as a pattern to make others by. [A. Booth]

Was with the mob at Pentrich and carried a hat filled with bullets. [W. Shipman]

This man was taken in womens clothes by Thomas Fidler.

Joseph WEIGHTMAN Snr. of Pentrich: FWK

Appointed secret committee man for Pentrich. [A. Booth]

Was at the fifth meeting at Asherfield barn. [A. Booth]

Was sent on Sunday the 8th June by J. Bacon to Nottingham by appointment to know whether the plans continued unaltered. [A. Booth]

Had a spear in his hand when at Mr. Samuel Fletchers of Pentrich and when they arrived at Kimberley he was seen to carry the gun, which was took from Mr. Fletchers and afterwards changed guns with Joseph Savage of Butterley. [Shipman] [W. Booth] [H. Hole] [J. Storer]

Passed by Ripley for Codnor & Nottingham on Tuesday morning about 4 o�clock and he and several other of the gang discovered Wm. Young Special Constable for Ripley and others with him concealed in a barn near Codnor looking after the mob and threatened to run their pikes and several swords through them if  they did not go out of the barn and join the insurgents party. William WEIGHTMAN of Pentrich: Farmer (brother of George)

William Sharpe of Pentrich assisted him in lifting a bag containing bullets, about 3 quarters of a hundred weight, upon his horse with which he rode off towards Butterley works. [W. Sharpe]

He was passing by Butterley on horseback with a bag of bullets under him and acknowledged to Mr George Goodwin that he was going to join the rebels who had just left Butterley  (Tuesday morning) [G. Goodwin]

About noon on Tuesday he was apprehended in a wood between Butterley and Swanwick. [G. Goodwin]

Was with the party beyond Eastwood and had a gun and endeavoured to persuade Thomas Jennings to proceed further with them. [T. Jennings]

Mr. WHEATCROFT of Buckland Hollow

A party was sent from Pentrich Lane End & brought away his guns. [Isaac Ludlam Jnr.]

Samuel Flint by the direction of the Nottingham Captain threw a large stone with great force against his door and broke it to pieces. [J. Wilkinson]

Ned WHITE of Codnor

McKessick delivered a gun to him at house on Tuesday morning June 10th [John Fletcher]

Carried McKessicks gun from Nottey Bridge to Langley Mill. [John Fletcher]

He was asked by McKessick to carry a bit of a gun for him under his frock, from his house at Heanor to Nottey Bridge, McKessick saying at the same time that he could not carry it secretly because he had only a coat. [E. White]

Was with the mob at Elijah Halls of South Wingfield Park, about 11 o�clock on Monday night, June the 9th [E. Hall]

William WILLIAMS of Swanwick

Was with the insurgents in their march from Butterley for Codnor and Kimberley & others.

John WRIGHT, son of Benjamin of Ripley

Marched with William Smith and others from Ripley on Tuesday morning June 10th. [G. Burrows]

Was seen at Ripley on Tuesday morning about 8 o�clock with Mr S. Hardwick, G. Burrows, W. Anthony & others, some of whom had arms. [Saml. Brown] [T. Cresswell]

Passed through Codnor about  past 8 o�clock on Tuesday morning with a party from Ripley. [Joseph Thorpe] [John Atkins]
