1817 Depositions - Regarding Pentrich Revolution

The following names are recorded in the 1817 depositions regarding the Pentrich Revolution. The depositions (or sworn statements) list information given by witnesses or in some cases the accused themselves and tell how each man was involved. Alfreton

Benbowes of Manchester had been on a mission there to ascertain whether the people of Derbyshire were coming forward to Petition Parliament for a Reform & to prevail on them to send delegates to town with petitions. [A.Booth]

A meeting at Peach�s the Queens Head on the common, between Benbowes, Thomas Bacon of Pentrich & James Barnes of Swanwick on the above subject.  [A.Booth]

A third body was to commence there & accumulate on its rout through Riddings, Selston, Bagthorpe & Moore Green. [A.Booth]

Had a committee man appointed at a meeting held at Asherfield. [J. Cope]

Birmingham

Was to have attacked & seized the depot at Weedon in Northamptonshire, as stated by T. Bacon. [James Booth]

Butterley

John Cope appointed secret committee man. [A.Booth]

The Wingfield & Pentrich parties were to march there on their way to Ripley, Codnor, Langley Mill & Nottingham. [A.Booth]

Seizure of the Ironworks there proposed at the 5th meeting at Asherfield Barn & calculation made of the number of the pike heads & cannon that might be got up there daily. [A.Booth] [James Booth]

A letter put into John Copes house in consequence (as he supposes) of his not attending the Asherfield Barn meetings regularly to know why the people did not come forward. [J. Cope]

June 10th - The mob arrived there about 3 o�clock on Tuesday morning armed with guns, pikes & swords. [J. Cope] [Wm. Booth] [H. Hole] [G. Goodwin]

Took several people out of their houses then compelled them to march with them in doing which Turner was the most active. [R. Wragg] [Chas. Walters]

Committee

Stevens of Nottingham it was understood was President of it; belonging to the Nottingham Hampden club. [A. Booth]

The Nottingham committee commanded T. Bacon to visit Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester &c. [A. Booth]

At the first or second meeting at Asherfield Barn it was agreed one should be appointed. [A. Booth]

At the second or third a secret one appointed [A. Booth]

To ascertain the number of arms in the different parishes & from whence ammunition might be taken & report same at the next committee. [J. Cope] [G. Burrows] [A. Booth]

Committees appointed for Pentrich, Alfreton, Swanwick & other places. [J.Cope]

Old Tommy Bacon at the 6th meeting at Asherfield Barn stated that there was a military one sitting at Nottingham and had been for the last fortnight. [J.Cope]

Luke Shipman supposed to have been with that held at Nottingham on Monday June 9th. [J. Graham] [Thomas Hensor]

Delegates

William Smith of Ripley from the Ripley Hampden club, Benbow arrives at Pentrich & another as one from Manchester & attended a meeting called by T. Bacon at the White Horse. [W. Young]

Information communicated by one at Leeds, to the Pentrich club that the rising which was to have taken place on Whit Monday was put off on account of the arrival of Oliver the London delegate in Yorkshire with information that they were not prepared in London. [James Booth]

On the Friday before last Whitsunday J. Cope met the Leeds delegate & George Weightman together who said the intended rising which was to have taken place on Whitsunday was put of till the 4th of June. [J. Cope]

Cope told the Leeds delegate he was going to Sheffield &c. [J. Cope]

The delegate for Leeds lodged at Timothy Mantles of Butterley who put him on the Road for Nottingham. [J. Cope]

The Yorkshire delegate returns from Birmingham & is supposed to have attended the 6th meeting at Asherfield Barn on Thursday night the 5th of June. [J.Cope]

Crabtree the Leeds delegate was at the White Horse Pentrich on Friday morning 6th June where J. Cope, Old Tommy, Bacon & George Weightman met him - & he told them all was going on well in the South. [J. Cope]

Derby

One Nelson of �..  about the time of the meetings in London to petition for reform attended a meeting at Mrs Weightman�s in Pentrich & left a parchment petition for their signature. [A. Booth]

Thomas Bacon the Pentrich delegate visits Hinckley, Leicester &c. [A. Booth]

The rules of its Hampden Club produced & adopted at a meeting of the Ripley Hampden club in preference to those of the Nottingham & Leicester Hampden clubs about 7 months ago. [J. Cope]

The depot there was to be taken after the capture of Nottingham by the insurgents. [J. Graham]

Hampden Club Heanor

For Heanor, held at Thomas Allen�s the Nags Head in Heanor. [John Fletcher]

Hampden Club  Ilkeston

For Ilkeston held at the Anchor. [J. Graham]

Plans for overturning the established Government were the topics discussed at the Meetings. [James Booth] [Isaac Ludlam Jnr]

At the meetings held at Ripley the writings of Mr. Cobbett and the Nottingham Review Newspaper were in general read to its members by John Moore. [G. Anthony] [Thomas Henser Jnr]

Hampden Club at Pentrich

One established at the house of Thomas Bacon in Pentrich, in consequence of a letter from him in London to Job Walters of Pentrich who was appointed either President or Secretary. [A. Booth] [James Booth]

Hampden Club Ripley

One established at Thomas Moores the Cock in Ripley 7 or 8 months ago, afterward held at Brassingtons. Then at Ensor where it was given up. [J. Cope] [G. Burrows] [Robert Moore] [George Anthony] [John Onions]
