1817 Depositions - Regarding Pentrich Revolution

The following names are recorded in the 1817 depositions regarding the Pentrich Revolution. The depositions (or sworn statements) list information given by witnesses or in some cases the accused themselves and tell how each man was involved. Ilkeston

Thomas Bacon, Stevens & Burton of Nottingham were to have met at Ilkeston about a month before Whitsuntide. [A. Booth]

Their party was to join the Wingfield, Pentrich, Butterley & Ripley Men on their march from Nottingham. [A. Booth]

The Hampden Club held at the Anchor there. [J. Graham]

Leeds

Thomas Bacon was to go there being commissioned by their Nottingham Committee. [A. Booth]

A Delegate from thence arrives at Pentrich, from Birmingham & attended & addresses the 6th meeting held at Asherfield Barn on Tuesday the 5th of June. [A. Booth]

The delegate returned home on 6th. [A. Booth]

With Sheffield were to have joined Nottingham. [James Booth]

Their delegate communicates of the Pentrich club that the rising would not take place on Wednesday owing to Oliver the London delegate having brought information into Yorkshire that London was not ready. [James Booth]

Leicester

Thomas Bacon the Pentrich delegate visits it as well as Hinckley, Derby &c. [A.Booth]

A man from there attended the 1st meeting at Sutton�s Asherfield Barn. [A. Booth]

Has to be attacked at the same time as Nottingham. [A.Booth]

The articles of a Hampden club held there, produced by John Moore at a meeting of the Ripley Hampden Club but not adopted. [J. Cope]

Liverpool

Was to have joined Manchester. [James Booth]

Manchester

Benbow of Manchester had been on a mission to Pentrich, Alfreton and other places to ascertain whether the people in Derbyshire were coming forward in petitioning for reform and to prevail on them to send delegates with petitions from every town & village to a general meeting of delegates in London. [A. Booth]

Thomas Bacon was to go there, being as it was understood commissioned by the Nottingham Committee. [A. Booth]

Was to have moved and joined Liverpool. [James Booth]

Northampton

At the 5th meeting at Asherfield Barn Thomas Bacon stated that the party which would rise there had volunteered their services to secure the depot at Weedon in that neighbourhood. [A.Booth]

Nottingham

Thomas Bacon the Pentrich delegate returns that way after he had been at Derby, Hinckley, Leicester &c. [A. Booth]

Great preparations were making there, & at Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds, London & other places as Thomas Bacon told A. Booth. [A.Booth]

The several parties were to proceed thereafter collecting together. [A. Booth]

Thomas Bacon went over there the day after the 5th meeting at Asherfield Barn (about 31st May) to acquaint the committee the plan, the plan of proceeding ¯ immediately to Nottingham was disapproved of at the last meeting. [A. Booth]

The men out of Derbyshire must proceed there in the first place. [A.Booth]

Was to rise at midnight on June the 9th. [A. Booth]

Great measures were to be taken & they could rise 16,000 men. [A. Booth]

If the insurgents succeeded in taking the town they were to procure Trent boats & send men down to Newark. [A. Booth]

Joseph Weightman went over there on Sunday 8th having been sent by Thomas Bacon & the Nottingham Captain who furnished him with Papers. [A. Booth]

The rules of the Hampden club produced by J. Moore at a meeting of the Ripley Hampden Club, held at Mr. Moores in Ripley about 7 months since. [J.Cope]

The Banks were to be taken. [J.Cope]

Pentrich

A man of the name of Burton arrives there from Nottingham & comes to Thomas Bacon�s about the time of the meeting of delegates in London with petitions for parliamentary reform. [A. Booth]

One Benbow of Manchester attended a meeting at the White Horse there called by Bacon and in addressing it exhorted them to send up a petition & a delegate with it. [W. Young]

Thomas Bacon fixed upon to be the delegate for. [A. Booth]

Money collected there for defraying the expence of the delegate to London. [A. Booth]

Hampden Club established there Thomas Bacon the head man of it, Job Walters now gone to America the secretary. [James Booth]

About a month or 5 weeks ago meetings again began to be held there & money collected for Bacons use. [A. Booth]

Joseph Weightman & James Lambley appointed secret committee man. [A. Booth]

The Wingfield party was to march there & then proceed together to Butterley thence all 3 parties to Ripley thence by Codnor & Langley Mill for Nottingham. [A. Booth]

This & the other parties were to be at Nottingham by 3 o�clock on Tuesday morning June the 10th. [A. Booth]

A genteel person on horseback came here on Monday June 9th before Joseph Weightman returned from Nottingham & reported that all things were going on well and there were no alterations in the plans. [A. Booth]

The Nottingham man left there on Friday June 6th to go to Swanwick. [J. Cope]

Ripley

Hampden club formed there about 2 months before the petitions were sent from that place for reform in Parliament. [G. Burrows] [I. Ludlam Jnr.]

The Wingfield  Pentrich & Butterley parties went to march there on their way for Codnor, Langley Mill & Nottingham. [A. Booth]

John Moore appointed to act a chairman at all times of the Hampden club, which was afterwards held at Brassingtons then at Ensors  also held at the Methodist meeting house in Ripley. [J. Cope] [G. Burrows] [Edward Moore]

The committee of the club were G. Burrows - John Moore  Wm. Smith the delegate & James Saint or Sant. [G. Burrows] [Geo. Anthony]

Sheffield

Thomas Bacon was to go there, he being committed by the Nottingham Committee it was supposed. [A. Booth]

John Cope of Butterley, went there on Whitsunday last, being previously furnished by Old T. Bacon with the address of the Landlord of the Blue Bell public house of the Sheffield Const***** [J. Cope] [**** means word illegible]

The conversation at the Blue Bell there, between Cope and the company was relative to the revolution. [J. Cope]

Sutton-in-Ashfield

The parties from thence would proceed on their route thro� Kirkby  Hucknall Torkard & be joined in the forest by a party from Mansfield. [A. Booth] [James Booth]

Swanwick

James Barnes & Edward Haslam appointed Secret Committee men. [A. Booth]

Wingfield

Their party was to march to pentrich and them proceed with the Pentrich party to Butterley from thence all three to Ripley  to take the Ripley men with them by Codnor & Langley Mill for Nottingham. [A. Booth]

The committee men there said there were 14 stand of arms at Colonel Haltons and 13 at Mr. Strelleys. [J. Cope]
